A dog-friendly stay creates a different handover from an ordinary holiday-let changeover. A clean kitchen and fresh bed linen can coexist with fur in a sofa seam, paw marks on low glass, or a damp throw folded into a cupboard. This guide is for an Isle of Man self-catering host preparing for the next guest after a stay with a dog. It adds a pet-specific check to the usual room-by-room changeover; it does not imply that CleanCo has cleaned a particular property.
Visit Isle of Man lists dog-friendly cottages and other accommodation across the island. The useful distinction for a host is not a fixed island-wide cleaning rule: record what your own listing permits. A cottage with a dog-accessible sofa near Port Erin needs a different textile check from a Douglas apartment whose dog policy limits access to a tiled living area.
The pet-specific changeover at a glance
- Check the host's dog-access map, house rules and the next arrival time
- Photograph existing stains or damage before cleaning, without including guests' personal items
- Collect bowls, washable throws and agreed pet items for separate cleaning or owner handover
- Lift visible fur from permitted seating, seams, skirting edges and suitable floors
- Clean paw or nose marks from compatible low glass, doors and hard surfaces
- Check pet-access areas for dampness, odour and any accident requiring a separate method
- Allow cleaned fabrics and floors to dry before replacing items or admitting the next guest
- Record work completed, exceptions and owner decisions for the next changeover
Start with the host's dog-access map
Write down where dogs are allowed, which throws or covers are provided, and who launders them. Include feeding spots, the route from garden or beach to the door, and any bedroom or sofa restrictions. Use the property’s actual rules rather than assuming every dog-friendly listing permits pets everywhere. Ask the host where pet bowls, leads and spare covers should be left; do not discard guest or owner items by guesswork.
Remove fur without damaging soft furnishings
Vacuum accessible hard floors and rugs with a suitable attachment, then inspect sofa seams, cushion edges and the space beneath movable furniture. A lint roller can pick up remaining visible fur on compatible fabrics. Check the upholstery care label and test an inconspicuous area before using any brush or product. If a cushion, curtain or mattress needs extraction, quote that separately and leave enough drying time; an ordinary changeover vacuum is not a deep fabric clean.
Keep used textiles separate from clean stock
Bag used dog throws and bedding according to the host’s laundry plan. Wash only at a temperature and with products allowed by the care label, then dry fully before storing. Do not put a damp cover back on a sofa to meet a tight check-in deadline. The host should provide enough spare stock if a same-day wash cannot finish in time.
Check low surfaces and the wet-weather route
Look at low glazing, patio doors, skirting, washable walls and the floor between the outside door and the dog’s usual resting spot. Remove loose grit before wiping or mopping so it is not rubbed into a finish. Use products suitable for each surface, follow label directions and keep a cleaned route out of use until it is dry. In wet Manx weather, the doorway may need a second check after supplies and linen have been carried through it.
Treat odour and accidents as exceptions, not a perfume task
If a room smells after ordinary cleaning, find and report the source before adding fragrance. An accident on carpet, padding or upholstery may need a compatible specialist method and more drying time than the booked changeover allows. Photograph the affected area for the host and agree who handles the extra work. Persistent odour, visible damage or a suspected pest problem should be escalated; cleaning cannot guarantee an allergen-free space or remove every trace of a previous pet.
Give the next guest an honest handover
Do a final low-level sightline check after the usual kitchen, bathroom and linen tasks. Note any fur, stain or damp item that could not be resolved safely within the allotted window. A short record with areas attended, items laundered, exceptions and photographs of property condition helps the owner decide whether more time or a separate carpet or upholstery clean is needed. Avoid claiming a space is pet-free, sanitised or safe for an allergy sufferer based on a visual clean.
What to include in a CleanCo enquiry
Send the island location, size and layout, the dog-access rules, floor and upholstery finishes, spare textile inventory, photographs of any problem area, checkout and next arrival times, and where waste and used laundry go. Ask CleanCo to confirm the exact scope, exclusions, products and drying window before booking. The standard changeover, linen work and any specialist fabric cleaning should be listed separately so the quote matches the property.
